Okay - maybe that title is a bit dramatic. You're definitely going to be just fine! But there are some things you should know ahead of time to ensure that you have an amazing first tattoo experience.

STAY HYDRATED AND DON'T FORGET TO EAT

It's really important to have a meal a few hours before your session and drink lots of water. I find that the biggest reason that people struggle during a tattoo is dehydration or not eating enough food - so snacks and a bottle of water are must-brings!

KEEP YOUR SKIN MOISTURIZED

Moisturizing ahead of time can make the tattoo process a bit easier - drier skin is always a little bit tougher to tattoo. I'd recommend starting to moisturize a couple weeks before your session to make sure your skin is nice and soft!

KNOW YOUR AFTERCARE

You should check in with your artist about their post-tattoo protocol! It's important to know what you'll need ahead of time so you can be prepared. And make sure you don't have any upcoming trips - you won't be able to submerge your tattoo in water or soak up any sun for 2-3 weeks at least!

GET A GOOD NIGHTS REST

Take it easy and get some sleep! Hungover tattoos = not fun tattoos.

BRING SOMETHING TO HELP DISTRACT YOU

One of the best distractions is talking - but it's not always possible during every session. I generally like to chat for a bit but sometimes it can be distracting for the artist or cause too much movement for the client depending on tattoo placement.

I recommend bringing headphones so you have the options of tuning into a show, podcast or some music!

WEAR SOMETHING COMFY

Be sure to wear something comfy, that you don't mind the possibility of staining. We try our best to avoid this but it's challenging in some areas. You can always change back into something else after anyways! Here's some recommendations for clothing based on tattoo location.

Front Torso: button-up or zip up hoodies, some clients prefer to wear nipple covers
Arm: you can wear a loose shirt or sweater and pull one arm out if you tend to get cold
Hip: tie-up bathing suit bottoms or a looser/more flexible underwear
Back: try a button up shirt or zip up hoodie turned around
Leg: skirt, shorts, loose pants, or underwear if you're comfortable

These are totally just guidelines. Never feel like you have to cover-up if you don't feel like it - feel free to wear whatever you're comfy with and your artist should ask if they need any adjustments to better access the tattoo.

SHOULD YOU SHAVE?

That depends!

Is the tattoo going in in area that you usually prefer to shave/wax? If so - go for it! Is it your first time removing hair in that area? It really depends how big your tattoo is.

I personally find it unnecessary for smaller pieces and am more than happy to give you a trim before we start your tattoo. If you are getting a larger piece or getting a tattoo in an area with a lot of hair growth it’s helpful to shave ahead of time. Just be careful and use sensitive products if it’s your first time shaving in that area - and try to do it the morning of your session or night before.

I would not recommend waxing unless you’re a regular and know how your body will react.

HAVE FUN!

Good luck on your first tattoo! Hopefully this helps clear up any questions you may have before your session.

And don't worry, it doesn't hurt too bad! Honestly, if I had to compare it to anything it would be like stepping into a hot shower after getting sunburnt? You've got this.
